When is Onam Celebrated?

Onam is celebrated on August 28th of every year. This day is
popularly called as “Thiru Onam” by the people. The traditional rituals take
place for 10 days before Thiru Onam from August 19. Generally, there are four
important days in Onam such as first day of Onam, day after Thiru Onam and
fourth day of Onam.
Where is Onam Celebrated?
The grand harvest festival takes
place in spectacular destinations of Kochi , Trivandrum , Thrissur and
Kottayam. One of the famous temples in Kerala is the Vamanamoorthy Temple .
Located at about 15 kilometres near Kochi ,
this temple is closely associated with Onam festival. There is an ancient story
behind this connection with the temple.

Government celebrates the Onam festival in a big way. Various cultural
activities will take place in the state of Kerala. Thousands of tourists will

What Will the People Do?
Yes, the people in the beautiful
state will start their day with an early bath, perform prayers and start
decorating their houses with colourful flowers. The floral decoration is called
as “Pookalam” by the people living in the place. All the houses will be
decorated with flowers for 10 days. Many organizations conduct pookalam
competitions for the people in various cities.

will join in the flag hoisting ceremony that will take place at Thrikakara Temple . All the guests will be
entertained with various cultural, music and dance performances. Vamana, the
main diety will be carried around the temple grounds along with a group of
elephants.
